I have never helped some one to make them feel good I help others because helping others makes me feel good.
So, I have to think that others are similar to me and hence help others to make themselves feel good, need has nothing to do with it.

If you help someone whom you need, you might just be manipulating them to be beholding to you. You might be paying back a kindness. Think about giving someone a ride to the airport so they will owe you a big favor. Or they helped you move, so you have to dog-sit even though you don't want to.
If you help someone who cannot help you, it seems that your motive is more "pure," out of altruism or the good of humanity. Think about comforting a child lost in the mall or helping an old lady cross the street.
Being "good" for "pure" reasons is what makes humans capable of kindness, sacrifice, patience, and love, instead of being selfish, angry beasts all the time.
It is what has allowed us to survive as a species.
See, I helped you because I wanted to answer this particular question and got 2 points for my trouble. If I had just answered and didn't get anything, that would be "pure."

Why not help someone in need. It's like helping an older person across the street or opening a door for someone, besides I enjoy helping people even someone like you who it sounds like doesn't know about the ability to help others w/out any reward. Try it sometime you might be surprised, you might even enjoy the good feeling you get just knowing you helped.

Help doesn't have to be selfish. If you want to help someone satisfaction comes not from what they can do for you, but rather by how it makes you feel when you help someone. Also, there is the karma angle, that what you give comes back to you, even if indirectly.

Karma. what goes around comes around. do unto others. pick a religion and theres a quaint little quote about helping others. if i just stood there while the guy kept dropping his wallet stuffings without helping, id feel weird.

perons help each other no matter who this "other" is, it's part of humanity inside them.he could feel sorry for you .for exemple, someone needs your help but you don't need this person like you claimed, you're one of many people that could help, won't you help him??even if you don't need him he needs you.we don't help people because we want somlething from them in exchange.we help them because we feel like to, like we're obliged to.it's our duty.
