I have been looking for a turn signal switch for my mitsubishi eclipse and can't seem to find the part, I'm wondering if perhaps there may be a special "mechanic's" word that I can look for to help me out?

Since the late 80's, the turn signal switch, headlight switch, dimmer switch and wiper switch are in many cars integrated into all one switch. When this occurs, it is called a COMBO switch.
Still, it may be a dealer item, but try at a quality auto parts store. Many discount stores may not have it.
Many discount (AND quality stores) operate on the 80-20 rule.
80% of sales are covered by 20% of inventory coverage.

A lot of the turn signal switches also control the headlamp dimmer and windshield wipers and as such are referred to as 'Multi Function Switches'.
