I am starting a themed tank, and i am having trouble finding the kind of decorations i require, can i put in dolls or other plastic or ceramic items not made to go in a tank?
Are there any steadfast rules?

You should only put things that are marked "aquarium safe" in the tank. Things like ceramics and stones slowly release chemicals or metals into the tank. This will slowly poison the fish over a long period of time, more sensitive fish will die more quickly.

Terra cotta is safe, glass is also safe (so lond as there are no sharp edges). Other than that stick to the aquarium isle at your local petstore.

Usually they say that if it isn't made for fishtanks, you shouldn't put it in the tank. This is because a lot of ceramic items and toys contain chemicals that can leach into the water and hurt our fish (lead, zinc, etc.) That said, if it is made of unpainted, unleaded glass, it is probably safe. Plastics that have never touched soap and are free of ALL residues/oils, etc. are probably also safe. ceramics with a non-lead glaze are probably also safe. Notice that I have said "probably" here... I wouldn't put anything that I wasn't sure of in with fish that were valuable of that I was particularly attached to.

as much as possible do nut put plastic or ceramic items in your tank.plastics usually lose their color when placed in water for a long time. you can buy themed decorations in pet shops. in my case i usually put big rocks the size of my fist and drift woods because it gives a natural touch to the tank and serves good breeding and hiding place for fishes

I fully agree with Ziz. She beat me to it lol. Please do not use anything not made for an aquarium in an aquarium where you want to put live animals.
