There isn't really that divide, although some people hypothosise that it might exist in some cities. Check out http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,347342,00.html
It has a discussion about whether any lines of sectarinism exist in English football.

no there is nothing like that hatred between those two clubs here in england....i am a liverpool supporter and our derby is againest everton...they are supposedly the catholic team and liverpool protestant, yet i am catholic and i am liverpool through and through so that should give you an idea of the religious influence here.

The rivalries usually stem between 2 teams from the same city eg manchester united and manchester city, although liverpool and man united is one of the biggest too, we are both from the north but not the same city.

In his autobiography ex-liverpool player Kenny Dalglish wrote how he was amazed that when his new club liverpool won a trophy they toured the city in an open top bus....in glasgow with celtic this was impossible because of the hatred between rangers and celtic!

Personally I cannot stand football but thankfully the teams in England are supported by fans. Religeon is not an issue and does not have any impact on the fan base of teams.

Not really, perhaps in the Liverpool area with a lot of Irish immigrants, but all of the rest of us don't allow Religion into sports. A Pompey and Celtic fan

Insane question, are you suggesting that there are no Catholics in England or the equally preposterous that the catholics in England do not like football? What happens in Gretna or Carlise do they all become Mormon or Methodist so they can support football?
