I hear a lot of people jumping on the Ohio State and Notre Dame national championship bandwagons. Although I believe that both of those teams could end up in a BCS game, I don't think that either of them will end up as the national champion. (A combination of a loss of starters and of difficult schedules will see to that.) The team that I believe will win the 2006 college football national championship will be West Virginia. They have 49 lettermen returning on a team that went 11-1 last year and beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Among those returning will be the starting quarterback Pat White, wide receiver Brandon Barrett, and the MVP of last year's Sugar Bowl, tailback Steve Slaton. Their two toughest games will be at Louisville and at Pittsburgh, so their schedule is pretty favorable.
So what do you think? How likely is it that West Virginia will be 2006 Division I college football champion?

West Viginia is going to have to hope that no one makes it out of any of the big conferences undefeated. If someone makes it out of a conference like the SEC or Big Ten undefeated... They are going to get push back to a regular BCS game.

A lot of hype was put into the win with Georgia last year. It was an excellent win for them. It's just unfortunate that was basically the only team that was worthy enough to give them a challenge all season. Georgia had to fight hard last year to make it out of the SEC alive.

West Virginia has a legit shot because of thier returning players and thier schedule is an absolute joke. The only game that they could lose is to a not so dominant Loiusville team.
If either of the young QB's at Texas don't lose games don't be surprised if they repeat. They get Ohio State game 2...OSU lost thier entire defense. Texas returns 16 starters including thier RB's, WR's and half thier O-line. They will have the best D-line in college this year.
Ohio state has a shot but a brutal schedule. If they get by Texas watch out.
The SEC is so tough will anyone get out being undefeated.
We shall see if USC can reload. I don't see someone going unbeaten in the Pac-10, too much parity.
I wouldnt be suprised if one or both of the teams in the title game have one loss this year.

I don't think it is very likely that WV will win college football's championship. I do agree with you that they will be a very tough team and will probably again go 11-1... I also agree with you that Ohio and ND will not win the NC either... I think we'll be looking again at someone from SEC or Big-12 My two choices are Florida State because Mr. Bowden had another wonderful recruiting year and Colorado Buffaloes. I know, your thinking about this and nodding your head, but hear me out. Colorado will be under a coach who at Iowa State turned the program a complete 180. Colorado has a very well balanced offense with an offensive line that before the 109 point meltdown helped colorado outscore their opponents by an average of 17+ points. They also have 2 returning threats at wide receiver, and 2 running backs who are able to gain heavy yardage at will behind an offensive line that ranked in the top 25 last year. Their questionable position will be at quarterback where it is always difficult to get Quarterbacks to adhere to a new system. At Florida State, Bobby Bowden hasn't really had a rebuilding year in 15 years... They are always a tough opponent, and I just have a feeling about them after watching them sort of melt down for a bowden team last year... I think that the Seminoles are about due...

Florida State With a few overturned plays here and there over the last 2 or 3 years they could have easily been playing in the National Championship Game. They are still and will always be one of the most dangerous teams in the country. If you could ask any head coach who they didn't want to play, I bet one team every coach would mention would be FSU. They have very exceptional athletes with NFL size and talent, even at all the backup positions. They rotate in over 25 players on defense every game, and about 20 on offense. There are only a handful of college teams that can go to their bench without having a drop off of talent. They last won it in 1999, and their bound to win another very soon.

West Virginia? The SEC, Big 12, Big 10 and ACC will have to disappear before a Big East school will win. They will have a good record again this year, but again, it is the Big East. Good basketball conference but not football.

The guy that said Colorado. The Big 12 North champion has a hard time competing with Texas Tech. If you can't win the Big 12 Championship how are you going to win the National Championship?

To answer your question, anybody but Oklahoma.
See you in Dallas.

Hook'em !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Florida has a good chance at making the national championship, with USC Trojans and Texas Vince Youngs, I mean Longhorns, losing their stars. It's really a toss up in my opinion. I like Ohio State and Notre Dame too. I disagree with you that West Virginia will win, but they aren't bad.

I give West Virginia a good shot at it along with Auburn and Texas. West Virginia has a favorable schedule as does Auburn and Texas plays Ohio State at Texas. My pick is Auburn but I give the Mountaineers a good shot at it!
