hi i am a nurse with a daughter of my own, if you are from the UK you have a scan at 12 weeks, which will measure the baby just to make sure it's growing OK, then you have one at 20 weeks, which is a detailed scan, where they check all of babies organs, and again to make sure it's growing OK, it's at the 20 week scan you can tell the sex of the baby

With my first pregnancy (completely normal and uncomplicated) I had one ultrasound at 20 weeks, and that was it.

With my current pregnancy (I'm 16 weeks), I had an ultrasound done between 12-13 weeks because we did not hear the heartbeat with the Dopplar. I was also diagnosed at that time with placenta previa (yet I have no symtoms) and I feel I was diagnosed too soon with that. I have an appointment this Thursday, but I probably won't get another ultrasound until I'm 20 weeks. If everything is OK, then that will be the last ultrasound.

It is wise to only have an ultrasound if it is medically necessary. I read an article today that exposure to ultrasound waves (in excess, and in a study done in mice-not humans) causes brain development issues. While it is fun and absolutely amazing to see your little one on screen, limit the exposure. You'll be holding that precious one in no time!!

I think it depends on your doc and what you insurance will cover, as well as if you have complications. At my clinic they no longer do one at 20 weeks, only at initial exam at 12 weeks. They get all the info they need from the first ultrasound and don't feel it's worth it to do one at 20 weeks just so you can know the sex. They are mean!
With my first I had a vaginal ultrasound at 12 weeks and the abdominal kind at 20 weeks.

Once in the beginning and MAYBE one more time when you get close to the end just so they can make sure the baby is in the right position and not breech.
