Why do people like rap music?

I am just wondering why people like rap so much, i think it sounds horable, i can never understand anything they are saying.

I hate it, but since this is a music question, I'll tell you all the stuff I like just for fun...

Finger Eleven, Nickelback, Five For Fighting, 3 Doors Down, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, Lifehouse, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, All-American Rejects, John Mayer, Daniel Powter, The Verve, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff, Ryan Cabrera, Carrie Underwood, Fall Out Boy, Bon Jovi.........

I think people like rap music b/c you don't have to have a good voice to sing along, you can just talk through the entire thing, you get to say bad words, and the rappers wear rags so the people who where rags automatically relate to them.

Not everyone likes rap music, myself included.

If some people want to listen to it, fine. That's their business. I am for free speech and all that, even though I don't agree with it.

Personally, I believe that music (if you will) that celebrates the degradation of women, assault on authority figures, and excessive swearing cannot be a good thing. Just too much negativity. And that doesn't even include the violence and senseless death within the rap industry.

So you can't understand anything they're saying? Probably a good thing. You'd be appalled if you could understand.

Hip Hop/Rap is not what it used to be, because it has become commercialised and formulaic (like most things in the world of entertainment). To appreciate when the scene was really good and delivered truly valuable messages, you should go back to the late 80s and 90s - check out people like Gang Starr, KRS 1, Rakim (of Eric B and Rakim fame) and of course you mentioned P.E. already, who were monumental in the contributions to the scene.

Same can be said about ANY other type of music out there. Most mainstream rap today is unlistenable. But there are good artists out there.

It's the same reason people like country music or pop music- it's just something that appeals to them. Those who like rap music might be asking themselves why you would like whatever music you like to listen to because it sounds "horrible."

People like it because they understand it. My mom hates it simply because she has not the slightest clue of what they are saying, but I do so I love it!
