Yes, actually, it did. In ancient civilizations apples, oranges, pomegranates, etc. could be used as currency. In Egypt the pharaoh used to tax people by collecting grain. So, yes, money did grow on trees.

The American dollar? I think not.

Money is not a thing. It's an idea.

Even the little pieces of paper you carry around that say "legal tender" on them are only good because they are officially recognized as money. It used to be that you could trade in your dollars for silver (and before that, gold), and all that was kept somewhere safe. Since we went off the silver standard, we keep the idea of money and trust in that. It works pretty well, and as a result we don't all have to produce our own food.

Yes if they are fruit trees. Why? Because you could sell the fruit and get money. So indirectly money does grow on trees. Any tree that can be sold grows money... Besides, the actual hard paper currency is made from trees. So in more than one way, money does grow on trees. Just depends which trees...

No... Unless you mean before currency, in which case people traded everything, so fruit could buy stuff.
The money tree is a type of tree with slightly coin shaped leaves, hence its name.

no.

our currency (in the U.S.) does not come from any tree-based source. it contains 25% rag content (which is cotton) so while it may not have ever grown on trees, it did come, at least in part) from a cotton field
