Music requires a response or a reactions..spiritually, physically or mentally. Fun is just one reaction to the stimuli...it can induce violence, anger,it can inspire and drive us beyond our own ability, it can give us faith, hope and of course make us love. But it can also break your heart. It has the capacity to annoy and frustrate us and at the same time can win us over or give us great peace and tranquillity. As you can see..music has the potential to draw out the full range of human emotion and thought...it just depends on you preference in music and how you respond to it.

Music is an abstract art form. U derive ur own meaning. But to b really honest , what i feel is, Music has a purpose beyond entertainment. Its a powerful tool to tell ppl what u feel. There r lotsa songs which has changed so many lives. If v guys keep thinkin that music is only for entertainment v would end up listenin to music only in few places like how v have theatres for movies n stage plays. Music lets u to release the pressure...., make u realise who u r..., sometimes it shows u the purpose to live. Its all in the way u take music.

I think there's a much deeper purpose to music than just pure entertainment.
It can be one of the few ways that a person or group can broadcast their feelings and the feelings of their social group. Punk was a musical expression of the teenage dissatisfaction of the traditional Givernment and authorities, and the group Kraftwerk used electronic music to picture the technological image of the future and also the technological world we live in.
Similarly, music can be used as a major social tool. Man cultures use music to preserve traditional religious belief, social rites and tribe and group identity and history, This is often the case with many African traditional music.
Before literacy, the Christian church relied on hymns, religious chants and Christian fantasy stories such as Saint George and the dragon to preach the message of the Bible to a largely illiterate population.
Songs of particular artists can also be the only view their fans gain of them, their ideas and views, as well as their personality. The song She's Lost Control, by Joy Division, is a good example. It circles around a girl having an epileptic fit (?) and the song is written so it seems that the singer Ian Curtis is watching this happen but is powerless to help ("She took me by the hand and said I've lost control.. I stared in disbelief as the crowds walked away...") Thi song is meant to represent the fear that Ian Curtis felt for his own epilepsy, the fear of being helpless to do anything about it, and also the burden it was placing on him.
Music can also give useful input to our society as well as being a reflection of it. Kraftwerk used computers at a time when they were considered both too large to be practical and also frightening. kraftwerk's innovative use of both traditionalist instruments such as flute alongside these frightening computerised technologies, and their influence was such that now the use of computer technology is now widespread in music and in society in general.
Music can also have a very powerful psychological effect on people. There have been several criminal cases in which violent music has played a part in influencing them. there has also been a proven link between sexually explicit lyrics and sexual activity.
So it would be reductionist to say music is just anything.

Music is my life. For me, music makes me feel calm and happy, even if the situation I'm in totally sucks. Some people might say it's just for fun, but if you really love music, it does much more than that.

music is much more than just a from of entertainment, just look at live8 it was all about helping people, and john lennon's song give peaces a chance changed peoples opionyons about war!
music is a powerful thing. evry1 has a favoret song, and most people have a song that sums up their life. a mother sings her baby to sleep and the baby grows up and sings their children to sleep. people in the trenches and at was keep their hopes up by singing songs. we cheer on our favoret football team by singing. african tribes use drums to warn and celebrate. a pease of music can mean so much to someone without hope, it is a way to express our deepest feelings without fear of jugement.
it brings people together and can even rip them apart! u can tell a culture from the music u hear!

The purpose of music is to provide beauty in an otherwise ugly world.

Does it need to have a purpose beyond entertainment? It can be expressive, therapeutic, informative, educational, anything you want it to be. That's the beauty of it.

Sometimes songs are educational and political. Even instrumental pieces can evoke specific imagery. For example a tuba playing a bouncy comical tune can make you think of something like a big fat man (they do this on film scores), and a grandiose symphonic piece can be used to stir national or local pride.
