A month and a half is *way* too early. A baby isn't supposed to have *anything* except breastfeeding (or formula) until the age of 6 months. Every health organization worldwide recognizes this today.

Yes, it is too early. Research has shown that the earlier you start solids (cereal included), the more likely baby is to have food allergies and be overweight later. Some doctors will say wait till 4 months, most will say wait till 6 months. It's best to hold off till they're ready for more than just the cereal, since it's just empty calories anyways. Formula or even better, breastmilk, is all a baby needs for at least the first 6 months, and some go longer.

Some signs to watch for that will tell you baby might be ready:
-baby is still hungry after 8-10 nursing sessions or 32oz of formula
-acts fussy or looks like he's 'begging' when you eat
-can lift and support his own head
-weighs at least 13lbs., and has doubled birth weight
At a month and a half, your baby is still a newborn and was made to get nutrition in liquid form and will likely not even be able to accept a spoon in the mouth because of the tongue reflex that they use to get milk out of the breast/bottle. Some people will tell you to put cereal in the bottle, but that's really not a hot idea.
The only reason this might be good is in the case of acid reflux. When you put cereal in a baby bottle, it is possible they could inhale some of the cereal into their lungs, since all the swallowing/inhaling stuff isn't down pat yet, and this causes pulmonary issues. Cereal is empty calories and baby ends up taking in more than he intended.

Solids have less nutritional value and are harder for young babies to digest. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that in the first 6 months breastfed babies do not need water, juice, or other foods.

YES-month and a half is too early.
Right time to start a baby on baby food is 3months+.
One may start with rice or other cereals formulas available in the market-making a thin paste and feeding with spoon. Gradually one can add mashed boiled vegetables, potato's and fruits. Baby can be fed one semi boiled egg. Never stop giving breast feed too soon. Breast feeding benefits the mother as much as does it benefit the baby. The breast milk is at human body temperature, it has the ideal density, it contains antibodies, it gives psychological security to the baby. The mother gets the pleasure, develops a better bond with the baby and is protected from breast cancer. The longer you breast feed the lesser are chances of developing breast cancer. The baby needs additional iron, vitaminC and mineral etc and these could be provided by addititional food only. One should aim that by the age of 7months+ the baby should be able to sit on the dinning table and eat a bit by him/her self most of the non spicy food items

It is. You have to let baby's system develop first. Around 4 months old is when you start introducing food to baby's diet. Don't rush baby into it, because it's really not good for baby's health. Next time you go to the supermarket check out the first foods for baby. They will all have the age of when baby should be eating the food and you will also see the types of different food, stages and textures within.

Yes. You should start your baby on rice cereal at about four months. Although challenging, you should spoon feed your baby the cereal. Lots of people put it in bottles, but this could choke the baby and weight gain could soon become an issue. Your baby should be able to sit upright in a chair and be able to swallow the food, not just spit it back out. Feeding the baby cereal earlier isn't going to make the baby sleep longer or act happier. Just enjoy the time you have bottle/breast feeding the baby now because in about five or six months, it'll be a real awakening!

If you don't know exactly what to start your baby on, you really need to get some advice from your pediatrician. A month and a half is incredibly early especially since the first few months are so important when they need breast milk. If you are unable to use breast milk, then the formula the doctor prescribed is the best until the baby is a little bit older.

Every child is different. I started my kids eating baby food when they still seemed hungry after having a bottle. I have three kids and each was different. My oldest started baby food at 4 months, my middle started at a little over a month, and my baby started at 2 and a half months. Do what feels comfortable to you and your husband. There is no book to tell you how to be a good parent. Just don't over feed your child and push him to obesity. Although my kids started earlier then some none of them are overweight.

YES!! Way too early. A baby should not be started on even rice cereal until 4-6 months, or whenever their doctor says it is ok. Children that are started on food too early have a higher chance of developing food allergies, becoming obese, or becoming a diebetic. My mom started all 4 of us kids on cereal at 3 weeks to get us to sleep at night and 3/4 are diabetic and the 4th if a pre-diabtetic.
