My son had a Rose Hair Tarantula (non-poisonous) for the last 5 years and we would let it crawl on us, never been bitten by it.

It died this year of old age. The males live anywhere from 3-5 years.

Some people may be allergic to the bite and may have reactions similar to a bee sting.

For a lot of info on all tarantulas, check out Arachnoboards at http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/.... Nice folks and very knowledgable for the most part. It sort of depends what qualities you're looking for in it which one might be best for you. Keep in mind that no matter what type you get, tarantulas are primarily a "display pet". Even the more handleable species shouldn't be "played with" like other pets. It is stressful and even dangerous for them (a short fall can result in a cracked carapice, which usually means death for these little guys).

Be advised that they might bite... although only when they feel threatened. The bite of course is not poisonous. I used to let one walk up and down my arms... they kind of float as they walk. Avoid sudden movements around your tarantula... they will become fearful and more apt to bite. I have never been bitten, but I understand it really hurts when they do!
