There's a reason that a lot of poor people are poor. Not to sound mean, but I live in a fairly poor area because I bought my home when I was only 20 years old. When you see the moronic things that I see daily from poor people, you realize that you could give them a million dollars and within about two years they'd be completely broke again, because they have no idea how to manage money. That's why you'll see people living in a 25,000 dollar home and driving a 60,000 dollar Escalade around, or, someone driving a 200 dollar car with a 5,000 dollar stereo system and 2,500 dollar rims.
You can give stupid people money all you want, it won't change the fact that they're stupid and that by being stupid, they're destined to waste money and manage it horribly.

Your understanding of socialism is not complete. It is a phase of developing and after a nation becomes established and the people have the sophistication of cohesion and nationality, socialism tends to lead towards capitalism as some devote more effort in achievement and rightfully expect more reward. Democracy works and so does communism and socialism but only to an extent. No form of government is perfect but why should you devote efforts at anything if you are just being equal to others that devote so little. It foes against the very fiber of a man to toil for naught, so capitalism and thus wealth are begun. There are no equal playing fields as is evidenced by the leaders of Russia and other communist and socialist countries having luxuries and others wait in line for bread. In North Korea, it is very true today. When you suggest workers unite, it is a joke...how could things be decided by a group of people without leadership and leadership then becomes an aristocracy and then we are back to where we began. Even tribal groups had their leaders and were alloted special rights over others including tributes from the people (wealth). I agree that things are not as good as they should be, but then we must work to improve the lot for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Socialism works well. . .Communism is what has failed miserably. Sweden is socialist, and it is one of the best countries in the world to live in.
Socialism is not based on "relying on someone else to take care of you", it is the tribal concept, that we all are parts of a whole, without which there would be no parts.
Socialism is a perfect hybrid of capitalism and Communism, as it encourages free markets, yet it also makes sure that those who work for a company are not tread upon. Capitalism is brutal and predatory, unchecked it uses exploitation and exhortion to further itself. As an underpaid employee at Wal-Mart I can testify. A mega-corporation like Wal-Mart can do whatever they wish to their employees, and no one does anything because they are to big to stop.
For instance, they are currently about to put into action a new policy that requires all employees to have completely open availability, able to work any of the seven days in a week, employees will no longer have set days off, as their schedules will be generated by computers. Many people I work with have a secondary job, and require a set schedule with set days off to allow for the demands of child-care and their spouse's employment. Wal-Mart doesn't care. They are obsessed with saving money and eliminating any "unnecessary" jobs; thus the computer generated scheduling (fewer HR employees).
Ever notice how none of the Wal-Marts have full-service butchers anymore? Well that is because a few years ago some meat-cutters at one store got together to sign a Union motion to get representation for better wages and better working conditions. Wal-Mart immediately fired the meat-cutters who signed the petition, and eliminated the job-code entirely from all their stores. Now the level of customer service we are able to provide has fallen, and five people are out of a job, and countless others had to take a cut in pay just to stay employed.
Another store, in Canada I believe, actually managed to have the majority of the employees sign the petition for a Labor Union. Wal-Mart closed the entire store down, fired all the employees that signed the petition, and cut their losses.
Those above examples are why pure Capitalism does not work. There must be checks and balances to keep money-hungry fatcats from taking advantage of hard working individuals who are simply trying to provide for their families as best they can.

How exactly do you have a right to my money? As long as I earned it fairly, you taking it is called stealing. I don't care what kind of "touchy feely" excuse you come up with, taking something that isn't yours is stealing.
However, you are right that the current distribution of wealth is unfair. It is inexcusable that somebody can have a 100ft yacht and a $1 million in the bank while there are sick and hungry people in the world. The question is how do we go about redistributing that wealth? There is your way, which is stealing and a crime. Or there is the capitalist way. We use our power as consumers to change things. We find out who the greedy are and we boycott them. Not only their businesses, but their family as well. We do not sell them a house in our neighborhood, we do not sell them food, we do not sell them a car, we do not give them any way to survive. All the money in the world will not help you if people refuse to take it until you change.
The way to make the world better is to change ourselves and refuse to accept those that will not conform. Stealing is wrong, for any reason. Let's be better than those we wish to change.

You get what you really want. So if someone wants to get rich, he/she has to work hard and/or smart and do whatever it takes (not illegal) to get there. I have seen poor getting rich and also rich getting poor. What you are saying is what I have from several people who do not stand up for themselves and crib about others. As long as this kind of attitude remains in the community it will not grow as it should. So you need to come out of it, think positive, build confidence and go ahead. If someone can do it, why can't you?
P.S. I am not pointing anything towards you personally.

So how do you explain the fall of the communist countries? They tried that, and they either collapsed, or are converting to capitalist systems. And Britain tried socialism - they nearly went bankrupt before Maggie Thatcher got them back on the right path.
Capitalism rewards people that take risks and succeed. Find a need, fill it, and you'll make money. Socialism teaches everyone to rely on someone else to take care of them. There's no incentive to work hard and succeed. If you do, you'll only be taxed more for your efforts. Pretty soon, you've destroyed any incentive to do better or do more. The economy stagnates and eventually collapses.

Many people think I am a socialist, simply because many of the things that I care deeply about many socialists do to, health care ,education and food for all kids.
This is what bothers me about socialists, with the sole exception of Israel. Whenever a socialist party comes into exclusive power (USSR or China) it becomes a repressive regime. The first freedom to go is speech, that my friend is why I will never be a Socialist.
Long live the first amendment!

Nobody forces anyone to work. If the 'fat cats' did not provide the jobs that 'enslave' poor people, they would be even poorer.

It sounds good in theory, but it never works that way. In the Jewish faith, they used to redistribute everyone's wealth once every 50 years, which kinda seems like a good idea, although it would really mess with the business world.
