A tragic thing happened to Michael after he won his third championship in 1993. His father, James Jordan, was murdered. This was a severe tragedy to Michael's life. and he decided to retire from basketball and play baseball for his father. Michael tried out for the Chicago White Sox. He didn't make the team, but was promoted to a minor league team (the Barons) and played ball for nearly two seasons. His baseball career was not taking off like he expected. He then decided to return to basketball.
On March 18, 1995, Jordan announced his return to the NBA through a two-word press release: "I'm back." The next day. Jordan came back to the game wearing his baseball number: he donned jersey number 45 (his number with the Barons), as his familiar 23 had been retired in his honor during his first retirement, and took the court with the Bulls to face the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, scoring 19 points in a Bulls loss. He wore 45 the last years of his NBA career when he was along side rip Hamilton and the Washington wizards. I think he switched to 45 because he retired his 23 for one reason and some one on the team had 23 already I believe.

When he came back into the league the first time, it represents the number his brother wore- that's why he was 23- half of 45
That was in the 94-95 season I believe

I believe it was like 89 or 90 or something, he wore it because his jersey was stolen from the bus or something. You can see a picture of this on a Sam Vincent error basketball card...can't remember the exact year.
