A piece of lumber scratched it and took off the suede/felt. Is there a repair kit you can buy at a hardware store? Its about 4 inches long, and I hate to call an upholstery place since they are a little expensive. Thanks.

As the web page below indicates, suede's nap (what you call "felt"?) can be restored with a light abrasive. When I was a lot younger, suede shoes were popular and I'd restore mine with a little sandpaper.

(Test an inconspicuous area first)

I'm not an expert. I can almost guarantee that any home repair will just as visable as the scratch if not worse. Live with it or break down and call for a professional repair.

I would go with the brass brush idea (soft).

Be very gentle.

What you try to do is not so much as to get rid of the
mark as it is to make it fainter.

Don't over do it.

the sandpaper guy is right, but you can also use one of those pumince stones or a brass brush. works on shoes anyway.
