Of course the chicken. At the beginning when the life came in this world it started with a jelly fish like creature. Then the birds and animal started to appear. This was the history behind evolution. So, the chicken came first to lay eggs for survival.

The egg came first. The embryo that was in the egg had to be a chicken. It didn't change once it was laid. The animal that laid the egg didn't have to be strictly a chicken. It could have been close, and a genetic defect occured that caused the egg to contain the first chicken. But that chicken had to hatch out of the egg.

Hi. The chicken could have been a mutation of another, similar creature. Or it could have looked quite different thousands or millions of years ago and slowly evolved to it's modern look. Or, if you believe in spontaneous generation, the EGG may have just appeared. (I doubt this one.) Or there may be some other explanation. But I can say this with certainty. All chickens come from eggs, but not all eggs lead to chickens. The egg came first.

In simple celled organisms like bacteria. The cell membrane is like an egg. Genetic material has to be in some kind of useful "egg" package structure. Before any reproduction can take place. More complex forms evolved later. When smaller single celled organisms infected larger celled organisms. To give rise to multicellular and later sexual organisms. The Genetic load or amount of information increased. Allowing greater cellular differentiation and speciesiation. Eventually the chicken. But, the egg first.

My daughter says the egg, because the chicken, as we know it, was evolved from something else. Therefore, the first real chicken had to be hatched out of an egg.

The egg far preceded the chicken dinosaurs lay eggs.
So the egg has been around Long before the chicken.

According to scientists, birds (chicken) evolved from dinosaurs and since dinosaurs were laying eggs long before chickens, I would say the egg came first. Perhaps you might want to ask if chicken came first or chicken egg came first? ;)

The chicken, it must have evolved from something, and would have only been recognized as a chicken when it hatched!
