"Mr". Jones, "Mrs". Jackson, "Miss" Johnson, etc.
My Mother was 'caucassion', my father was 'negro'. I never knew my father & was raised as 'dark complected' in an all 'caucassion' enviroment. When I asked what a 'rigger' (wid a 'n') was & was interogated as to 'who called you that', I was merely told, "stay away from them". By the time I was twelve I was 'enlightened' with the devestating 'news' that my father was indeed a 'negro'. I spent about 5 years trying to think up a scheme to 'get out of it'. And YER confused? If it's none of my biznez, how in the heck is it botherin YOU? If yer confused, wait five years & maybe you'll do as I did & get over it! 'We are all colored', I'm only half black, from the waist down, & my mammy ain't raised no foo!

It is best to call anyone by name. We use the word Black to describe the physical complexion of an individual when completing a form, but not to refer to a race. Regarding the "niger" issue, don't call them "niger" because they don't like it with a reason. Look at it this way: I'm a dog and I get angry and bite people when I hear "bad dog!" because I have a traumatic past with my previous owner. But I can always bark "bad dog!" at other dogs and they don't mind.
Racism is a discriminative attitude towards others and to oneself. At this generation, I would say that the most "racist" towards others are the chinese, the most racist towards oneself are the blacks.

Wow, thats a gutsy question.
I suppose by your post that you are from Australia or NZ, but I could be wrong.
I don't have an answer for you, but will add to your ?
Here in the USA, people of color are generally referred to as African Americans, this title gets a friend of mine really upset...she is from Jamacia and has traced her family back a good 6 generations...she insists she could care less if people refer to her as brown, black, or colored, but she freaks out when people tag her as African American....
Me, I'm white, you can call me caucasian, but gosh that's a long word...pale, honkey, cracker, hell, you can call me anything and it don't matter to me in the least, cause they're just words, words can't harm me, only actions can.

I am black
so you can say I am coloured black
or I am black coloured
I am coloured
I am black
you work it out
It`s a bit of a grey area as depending where you live
depends on what expression is used

why do you need a word to describe them? are you in some sort of discussion that that needs to describe them? yes, it is confusing, they call themselves niggers, but they won't allow anybody else call them that, they think its derogatory. maybe it's best that a black/coloured person answer your question.

It depends on who you are with. Whatever your friends or the people around you want to be called. If they are true friends you should be able to bring this topic up to them. I prefer to be called black.

I suppose it's a bit like you telling your best mate he's a prat, but you wouldn't like a stranger to call him that. Sounds as if they have a very healthy sense of humour your mates.
