It is physically impossible to fail a driving test in the US. I lived there for a year when I was younger and my parents had to take tests to drive over there for more than 3 months. The initial problem was that in order to take the test in the first place, you need a car. In order to buy a car you need insurance, in order to get insurance, you need a licence, in order to get a licence, you need a car............

Luckily, a kindly neighbour (or neighbOR as I guess he would have been) lent my Dad his car to take the test. Unluckily, it was a Chevy Suburban "the biggest sports utility vehicle on the planet" as the advert says.

It came to the test and although my Dad is a great driver, even he could not parallel park this car between two cones (yes cones, this was not done on the real road but in a test centre! (or centER as I guess it was)) which marked out a space which was shorter than the length of the car itself. Despite hitting the cones, he still passed. So it seems you do not have to everything correctly to pass.

After that comes the theory test, you have to get a certain number of questions correct. So, for example, they give you 25 questions and you have to get 20 right. Once you have answered the 25 questions, if you have answered less than 20 correctly, they give you more questions until you have answered at least 20 right.

Mind you, I guess they have to be a bit lenient if they are going to let 14 year old's drive!

I have never heard of anything here stateside, but then again, I have never had a test failure. I have only seen what is called a "retest" and this is an opportunity for you to "correct" what you had failed on the initial test.
If you were to piss off the instructor, then you may have a more difficult time.
