Do you like fanfiction? Do you think sometimes is better than the original story? Is it just a way to deal with the anxiety of waiting for a new book or new episode?

I was wondering about this. I've read a lot of amazing fanfiction authors (Cassandra Claire, for example) who also write their own stories, but do you think that maybe someday it will be possible to publish a fanfiction? I understand there's a lot of copyright laws, but could it be arranged someday in the future?

Cassie Claire is brilliant. Unforntunatly, she's the exception, not the rule. 99% of fanfiction is drivel, in my opinion, and I've read a lot.

As for publishing Fanfiction, it probably depends on the authors. Star Trek fanfiction made it. So did Star Wars. Whether any others will, remains to be seen.

The only way you could publish a fanfiction is with the permission of the copyright holder.

There IS such a thing as a sponsored fanfiction. You see it all the time in books that are released of tv shows etc. Buffy, star trek, whatever. Also there are often stories of characters written by different writers. Elric for example.

I think that fanfiction is harmless and allows people to have some fun with characters and to really get involved in the story. I also think that some people take them WAY to seriously.

I agree with what RA Salvatore said at a book signing I recently attended. He told a young fanfic writer that he didn't mind fanfic, he was actually a bit flattered by it, but that fanfic writers should never expect to be published. With the exception of licensed fanfic like Halo novels etc., the only place fanfic will be publishable is the internet. You will never make money off someone else's characters. And fanfic writers should always respect the original authors' views (for instance, George RR Martin is vehemently AGAINST A Song of Ice and Fire fanfic).

Personally I don't read fanfic but I don't care if people choose to write it. But as a published writer myself it seems like a waste of time. Most of the fun of writing is creating people, as they are what drives a story. Fanfic writing is a creative hobby but nothing more.
