I am english and then British.

So when england are playing in the world cup/rugby etc I will fly my St Georges Cross with PRIDE. I am in no way being racist doing so - I support all other people to fly what ever flag they want to for example during the world cup this year down the road in which I live there was a New Zealand flag, scottish flag, zimbawa (sorry can't spell), japanese and the st georges cross flag flying - It looked great, every one chatted about the games and the flags and NOBODY took offence.

For many years after independence(60 years now) we regarded British as exploiters who plundered our country(India). A generation has grown up and old prejudices have disappeared. Many in the country are thankful to the British for the basic institutions that were created which are serving the country in good stead even now. Sad part is partition of the country has left wounds which have not healed even today and some wounds are still festering. Otherwise today we love the British all that is British including the Union Jack. No prejudices whatsoever about the beautiful Union Jack.

I don't think a flag cares about race, religion or colour. However some people do use it to shout their small minded ideas. I think it is important to remember, especially with the St Georges cross, that when our multicultural athletes and other sports men and women compete, this is the flag they fly. This is what it should be used and remembered for.

I do know one Asian lady who says she feels intimidated by groups of young men walking down the road, carrying the flag, even during the world cup. I asked her if she would feel intimidated by a group of lads walking down the street being just as roudy but without the flag. Of course, it would.

It's just a flag to show the nationality of British ships. The Union Flag (the same thing but not on a boat) is not itself racist but has been adopted as a symbol for some racist and nationaist organisations and so has some racist links.

A view of Union Jack from America.
I ride an old Triumph in Northern California, which is packed full of Harley Davidson bikes. My riding leathers have Union Jack on back of jacket. When I ride, I get mean glares, flipped off, inaudible yells and God forbid if I need to park near a pack of HOG's .
With that same logic, should I in turn be flipping the birdie to people who drive Honda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi or BMW when I am in my Chevy?

iM Black British and i dont find the union jack racist. England must be the only country in the world that feels ashamed to fly its flag. The liberals in this place just make up stuff as they go along.
Its pathetic.
Only a pathetic country would denounce their flag, some sort of superior complex going on bcs England wasnt the only country to colonise was it? I dont see the spanish or french or portugese or italians saying"oooooh we cant fly our flag, bcs it means we are superior and colonized the world!"
Ive had enuff of the bollocks!

Fly the St Georges Cross flag if your English.

The Union Jack in some places can be associated with the British Empire and in spme areas of India and Africa it is not liked.
But it wouldn't stop me from flying it in the UK.

Anybody who finds the Union Jack or the St. George flag offensive in this country obviously has origins elsewhere, e.g. Pakistan, India etc...

If it bothers them that much there is nothing stopping them leaving the country and going to where their origins lie.

When in Rome, well it applies here as well.
