Take him to small claims court. You don't have to have a lawyer, and in many cases you don't even have to have a written contract. Many states recognize "verbal contracts" as legally binding. If you can prove that you gave this guy $500.00 and he promised to pay you back, or if you can prove that you provided him with goods and/or services and he agreed to pay you $500.00 for them, you have a good chance of convincing a judge to order this guy to pay up.

You can sue him in small claims court. The rules of evidence are the whole proceedings are informal. It's meant to be user friendly. You will need to go to the Clerk's Office of the county (probably the county were the loan took place) and ask the court personnel what forms you need to file against the dude. You will have to complete the paperwork, have a current address for him so that he can be served the court papers, and pay the filing fee. When you state what you want from the dude, don't forget to ask for the $500, the amount of the court costs, and attorney's fees if applicable (just in case you need to hire an attorney).
Be warned that if you only come to court with your word that the money was a LOAN - you know that he will say it was a GIFT, if he even admits he got the money. You need to have evidence. For instance, if there was a signed agreement or copies of emails where he admits he owes the money to you, people who were present when the loan was made and who can testify as to the terms of the loan...
I'm not an attorney, but I do know that there are time limitations and if you don't act timely, you may waive your rights to recover the monies.
Taking him to court and him being ordered to pay are entirely different than him actually paying. It just might better use of your time to just forget it and chalk it up to a costly learing experience.
GOOD LUCK.

There are lawyers that do free consultations: look it up online. try google and google local lawyers in your area
It depends where you are.
If you are in the States it is up to your State to regulate how you would go about that.
Do you have a contract? what is your proof? how sound is your proof? did you state out if not monetary value that you can sue for something else. It depdends what you want to sue him for.
You first need to ask him for the money. ANd then in writing with date and signature that yiour asking for the money.
If you want. you can ask the guy to draw up a contract with you. make sure you have a witness sign it. you keep the oringial.and make 3-4 copies. give one or two copies to the person and keep the rest in a safe area.
You can make it out so that he can pay you in other fees ( such as allotments or even calteralerl (sp) say instead of paying ( name) $500 dollars that ( name of person owing) will pay out debt by giving to keeep ( incert object of 500 value)
hope that helps
you should talk to a lawyer though

The first thing you do is take a box cutter and walk up to him and stick it between his legs and pull up with great force emasculating him (cutting off his wacker&scrotum) when he hits the ground kick him in the head real hard then take his wallet. If he has no wallet do the same to everyone in his family..In fact for 500.00 I'll do it for you..
