And it's normally when i'm not even in a bad mood- just because i'm not sitting there grinning to myself doesn't mean im unhappy

Me too! Especially when it's some stranger on the street. Nobody ever tells random men to Smile! but everyone thinks it's their right to dictate to females how they should feel. Usually I'm not even in a bad mood to begin with, but if I am, I just tell the offending stranger that my dog just died. Reminds 'em to mind their own business.

I hate this too! People take you at face value and just assume that you "look" unhappy, so they feel it's their duty to infringe upon your privacy and tell you in no uncertain terms and with out your permission that you should cheer up! (Have they marketed the corner on cheerfulness or something??).
This plucks my nerves to no end! Especially when they proceed to try to touch my face to form a smile on it! Grrrrrrrrrr!! if fire could flash from my eyes they would be burned to a crisp!

You know what else goes along with this that I especially hate? It's when you are quiet. You are with a few friends say, and someone says "hey! why are you so quiet?"" Don't you have anything to say". I mean to say that I am more than willing to contribute to the conversation all the way around, but I am not a non-stop talker! I don't like to keep on talking just to please someone who thinks that I am too quiet! What's the point? It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I now purposely talk when I want and be quiet when I want and when it bothers someone then I say "what do you want me to say!" "Why does my quietness bother you? This usually gets them off my back.

I get this all the time and it's one of the most irritating things that some one can say. Probably because most of them don't say it in a tone that we consider thoughtful, it is often said in a sort of lilting jibe, from some one who is propagating a higher emotional standpoint - This defeats the purpose of saying 'smile!' or 'cheer up', or 'it might never happen' etc
The message they give isn't consistent with what they are telling you, it just becomes a stock phrase, meaningless and removed from the phrases' intention. It is easy for someone to bark empty emotional commands (it is a sign that some one doesn't value your true feelings very highly) and annoying to be on the receiving end of them. Next time tell them to get fckd!

If you are like me, you get annoyed with people who try to tell you what to do or how to feel.
People who run around with big smiles all the time look so fake.
Sometimes I just like getting a good grump on, and I don't want any sunny bunny trying to cheer me up. After I've been grumpy long enough, I'll cheer myself up, thank you.

Because you dont like other people feeling bad for you or aknowledging you might not be in the best mood. Or maybe you'd rather them ask whats wrong instead of just telling you to cheer up...

Yeah totally if im in a quiet mood not even peed off and someone comments it just pushes me into a dark mood i tink its because people dont like other people making judgments on how they are feeling, cos what would they know right? after my partners sister died i went to the shop and someone said "smile it might never happen!" see what did he know! and i just wanted to crack him one!

YES!!!!

It isn't helpful if you are down to be told to "cheer up" or "smile, it may never happen". It's like telling someone with a broken leg to "just go for a run". Saying it does not necessarily make it possible!

Therefore, it makes us stroppy.

Because you are STUBBORN! You are probably also a polarity -responder, one of those people when you say "yes," they say "no." You probably are young, too, and want attention. Your belligerence probably affords you quite a few sympathetic ears, and you thrive on sharing your bad moods with people.

I think it's because you are the revengeful type. Don't take me wrong but it happens with me sometimes that I feel like doing the opposite of what I'm told.

Oh believe me you are not alone. When I'm depressed and people tell me to cheer up it makes matters worse for me. Or if I'm crying and they try to console me I cry even harder. So, yeah I do that too.
