It almost looks like algae. What is it? Is it bad? How can I get rid of it?

It sounds more like LICHEN than moss.I presume it's only growing on one side of your tree.The NORTH side. If you look at anything that faces north you will more than likely find lichen growing, it's because it doesn't get any sunshine on it. It is natural and will not harm your trees. It would be a waste of time trying to get rid of it.

Something called moss, I believe. You can't get rid of it, unless you want to scrape the bark off. But then you'd hurt the poor trees. :-(

moss or mold.........call home depot or a gardening place and they'll tell you what to do. It might be that the tree has not enough light and the moss is growing in the dampness

Just let it be. It's moss. Some people pay lots of $ to have moss put on their ground in area out of the sun where they can't grow grass. I find it to be very pretty!

it could be moss, you could try treating it with a moss killer but you may damage the tree!

its moss. you must live in a moist area. try going to homedepot and get moss begone its weed killer just it kills moss.
