Ever since I had someone come look at my trees and they told me ants and earwigs are a sign of a dying and stressed out tree, I am paranoid about ants. I see ants all over my trees. I have no problem with them, actually, I like the little things. Earwigs I hate! Are ants really a sign that your trees are doomed?

I note the usual crappy answers at the beginning, so no change there!!!
Ants climbing up your tree are doing you a big favour - they're keeping the aphids in a colony in one place, thus preventing the bloody things from getting ensconced everywhere. The ants milk them for their sugar which causes your leaves to get fungal diseases. Of course, the ants also make it easy for you to eradicate that particular colony of aphids if you want to - just follow them up the tree with your aphid spray. The ants don't do much harm to your plants, whereas the earwigs will make some holes as they eat leaves or blooms, so you can get rid of those by whatever means. Usually this is done by placing an upturned flowerpot filled with crumpled newspaper on top of a garden stick. Next morning, you'll be able to harvest your earwigs out of the paper. Don't get rid of the ants unless they're becoming a pest or getting into the house, in which case a quick puff of ant powder will do the job. Enjoy your garden and take no notice of your friend. I long since found that these 'experts' are a bloody nuisance - they're worse than the garden pests sometimes!
