Implantation happens when the fertilized egg (now called a blastocyst) has completed its travel through the fallopian tube and attaches to the lining of the uterus. The blastocyst is a cluster of tiny cells, smaller than the head of a pin.
Implantation happens on average nine days (6-12 days) after ovulation and fertilization.
Most women have no symptoms on the day of implantation but some report a couple of drops of blood, which can be either red or brown or they have mild cramps. This is also called 'implantation bleeding or cramping.'
That bleeding is usually no more than a couple of drops. If it's like a period, then it's unlikely implantation bleeding.
But most women who become pregnant do not experience typical implantation bleeding, and many women who are not pregnant experience some spotting.

On day 14 or 15 of a normal cycle an egg is released and if fertilized it will spend the next several days (usually 7-12 days) moving thru the reproductive system on a path to the uterus. Once there the embryo will burrow into the lining of the uterus making connections with the mother's circulatory system. For some women when this burrowing happens it can cause some bleeding because it has to break the uterine lining to burrow in. This is why some women bleed. I never have had implantation bleeding in my pregnancies.

Implantation bleeding is a tiny bit of spotting at the time that the embryo implants into the uterus. It usually occurs approximately 7 days after conception, which is typically about 7 days before you expect to get your next period.

Implantation bleeding is not a reliable sign of pregnancy. Most women who are pregnant never have implantation bleeding. Furthermore, many women who have what appears to be implantation bleeding are not pregnant.

Implantation bleeding is usually light bleeding caused by the fertilized egg attaching (implanting) itself to the lining of the uterus about 6 to 12 days after conception.
