I'm going to college this fall and am looking around for a good laptop to carry with me. I'm considering an apple because I've heard that they are reliable and don't crash. I'm open to any and all suggestions for good deals. I want something that can handle a lot of writing and can play games possibly (like world of warcraft). It's not required that it can do video games, though, because it's mainly for school (but it'd be a plus!). I want my laptop to have 1GB of RAM, wireless capabilities, portability, reliability, and hopefully cost under $1,200. =) Thank you.

Dell XPS with Intel Centrino Duo technology. Its processor is a Intel Core Duo processor. Its around 1000 excluding shipping and taxes.
Or, you should get a refurbished laptop from Dell Outlet. They have good deals on laptops. They have laptops that have Intel Core Duo processor for around $500-1000. Some are previously ordered meaning the original buyer didn't even use it once. They have been tested by Dell trained factory technincians, so they ensure that it will work properly. Also, Windows XP never crashes on you.

Core Duo.
Do more.

well right now, the intel core2 duo is definitely the best processor, however they don't have many laptops using this type of processor just yet. if you can wait a month or two then the core2 duo should be out and about and it is a blazing processor. otherwise, i would recommend the IBM Thinkpad T42, or Thinkpad T42p. both models are made very sturdy, have a very good graphics chip (i've played many games including WoW on it), and it seems to be much faster than many of the other laptops i've tried in the past. The battery life is great, and the wireless seems to reach quite far.

it really depends on your major.

If your related to computer science or info systems..
I would recommend that you get a pc rather than a mac..
because lot of programs that are used are really not compatible with mac.

And plus... if you want to run those games... you'll be better off with pc's...

well.. unless your loaded and can buy the mac book pro :0

some brands that I recommend are: sony, IBM, Toshiba, compact.
If your budget is tight, you would want to consider Dell.. since they have really cheap ones.

1GB won't come around cheap...
but their is a Toshiba U205 that is around $1200
has a core duo intel and have 1 gb ram...
go check it out at toshiba's website.

As for the games..
you would want a better graphic card then the default one that comes with the laptops.. which are normally shares memory with your ram.

but remember.. more the ram and better the graphic card..
it'll cost more and more..so choose wisely!

good luck!

I would go with any of the following brands:

Hewlett Packard (HP)
Dell
Toshiba

Best Buy have some great deals on small laptops that are incredible. As for a Mac, they are great, but would cost you more than your budget calls for. Good luck in college!

you really need to decide if you want it for gaming or not. If you are just using it to write papers and reports, you can do that with a 486. If you want it for gaming, i suggest getting the gest one that you can afford. Laptops are a lot harder to upgrade than desktops. Make sure you don't get one that will be obsolete in 6 months.

Apple computers are too expensive, $1200 bucks won't be enough. Consider a Compaq or Toshiba or Dell, with dual processor, and a big hard disk, like 100GB.
