Hey Monkey Boy,

I am sure no one knows for sure. The tongue is as old as the human species. The tongue is used in Polynesian culture in the warrior dances.

The tongue is used for taste, eating, speaking, and yes teasing and sex. Without a tongue, you could not speak properly, if at all. A punishment from old is to rip out the tongue (of a liar perhaps).

I do not believe anyone can answer this question with authority and true knowledge of the gesture.

Monkey Sticking Tongue Out

The gesture dates well into pre-history to a time when non-verbal communication was about the only communication available.

Originally a sign to show disgust, it simply mimicked the instinctive reflex that is triggered by eating a bad oyster getting a fly in ones mouth. As a bonus, it also reflects the facial contortions that occur just prior to vomiting.

As such, it evolved into one of the most powerful insults in the pre-language world and has many situationally-dependent meanings today--from a sign of "I'm not afraid of you" defiance to "See? I told you so!" victory.

And this ones for free: what's so insulting and violence-provoking about the middle finger? Let's just say in a world without Charmin it was the most disgusting part of the human body (and in certain, third-world countries it still is).

This derives from Medieval England when a gossiping whench was gagged by an Iron brace ( ahh those were the days) .....should she continue afterwards on having the brace removed her tongue was split and if gossiping continued she would walk through town wagging her tongue to prove it wasn't me in the first place !
