Actually seeing the word yawn caused to to yawn. but i did it with out closing my eyes i think you usually close your eyes as a reflex . Im not positive though

I think it has to do with the muscular effort involved; the eyelid muscles belonging of course to the muscle group involved in the yawn. I've kept my eyes open for small yawns but for the wide, gaping yawn it's impossible. You can't *sneeze* with your eyes open either.

A better question is, why do people yawn when they hear or see the word yawn?

I don't close my eyes when I yawn and to be honest, I didn't particularly notice that other people did. It must be a certain percentage of the population that do due to a genetic propensity, I imagine, and the rest don't due to a lack of this.
I know that everyone shuts their eyes for a second when they sneeze - this must be similar. It's an instictive reaction that compels you to close your eyes.

When we sneeze we close our eyes without even realising but we can yawn with our eyes open....
