Love. It needs to be unconditional to be true love, love that was conditional to begin with, turns into hate.

Though hate is just a sign that we haven't yet learnt what this love relationship was meant to teach us. That is when love turns sour.

These are polar emotions. The intensity of hate is frequently the mirror image of the intensity of the love. Witness the movie "War of the Roses".

The more extreme love and hate become, the thinner the line between them. "Hate traps us by binding us too tightly to our adersary...I cannot hate them because nothing binds me to them; I have nothing in common with them." (from Milan Kundera's "Immortality") Love and hate are not opposed, as is often thought in the west. They both rise from strong attachment and emotion. The opposite of them is apathy.

Contrary to popular opinion, the oppisite of love is not hate, it is indiference. Love and hate are almost the same thing, they are both fuled by passion, whereas indifference is passionless.
