It all depends on if the music grabs me and sucks me in.
I dont like music based on populairity. Though I must say most of the popular pop princessess I could live without. But it's not because they are popular it's cause you dont feel anything when you listen to their music, it's like fake emotion and I hate that.
So I guess you could say I pick bands I like by emotional connection and relation to my own feelings and stuff. If music can control my mood, it's pretty powerful S@##

Originality is the first thing. Even if I don't like it particularly the first time around a lot of my favorite bands have been the ones that grew on me. If a band out there is jumping on the style band wagon just to sell records or gain noterity then I have no respect for them. Case in point. The Strokes, when they forst started they had this hard edge singing off key but making it work sound to them. But with their new stuff, it sounds like they're trying to bring back the 80's just like every other band out there.
Diversity is also very important. If all their songs sound the same then I'm not into. I bought Godsmacks first album because I liked one of their singles and I quickly found out that all their songs not only sounded the same but had the same lyrics...Lame...Stain'd is also another talentless band. He sings nothing but if heartache over a chord progression of Em, G, C, D not necessarily in that order.
True musical talent. I have to hear more then just guitar base drums and a guy singing over it. I love it when I hear little things that I didn't pick up on originally and can hear the love of the music that the band is portraying
Singers who can actually sing rather then just yelling in a mic and the less cussing the better. If you can effectively get a cross what you want without every other word beinf Fk or Sht then that shows true artistry
Music is art and a lot of people forget that. If someone did a gallery showcase of stick figures he drew it would get boring quickly, but when you look at someone's painting that took them years to create with life and vibrancy you're going to want to just sit there and take it all in...same with music.

A song will either stick with me or not. If it does then I listen to other music by the band and see if I like it all or just that one song. The best way for a band to gain me as a fan is to have lyrics I can relate too- words that actually mean something like Suicidal Tendencies- they have the best lyrics. Or bands that can amuse me like Barenaked Ladies- they are the best live band ever!

Listen to the words and the music.... what turns me off to a band is not having any meaning to their music, not writing their own music, too many things, the best way for a band to gain me as a fan is to play good music.

As a guitarist, the music grabs me first. I listen for something other than just plain chords like Nirvana always played. After the guitar, I usually listen to the drums and then finally the lyrics (if any). For me, it's good musicianship that makes me like a band. Bands with instrumental sections (guitar solos, synchronized riffs between gutiar, bass and keys) usually make it to the top of my list. HOwever, if you are looking to form a band of your own I must say that these things aren't likely to get you anywhere. The general american public likes catchy melodies, simple chord structures and a basic 4/4 time. Limit solos are leave them out completely and that will get you noticed.

Originality. Now a days it seems people are playing the exact same things. Talent is a very big plus. No one wants to listen to someone that just sucks. And I hate it when they try to do different types of music in one CD. Most people buy a CD because they like one song and to find out if they might like the rest. When you buy a CD expecting hard rock and it's only the one song that is, it's disappointing. And closes your mind even if the music is good.

I listen to what I think sounds good.
I like a band if the singer's voice is really good, they have something different about them or they did somethign really innovative, they're really talented, or if they have a good rhythm section, or basically as long as it sounds good. Underlining factor- you can't suck. If you suck, you can't get anywhere....unless you're Hawthorne Heights *rolls eyes*
What turns me off of a band is if they're untalented, generic, boring, the guy's voice is annoying, and if you can tell they're trying to be the genre that they'e trying to be.
