A driver is sponsored by numerous companies to help pay for expenses they incur, in return the driver basically uses the car (and uniform) as a moving billboard, advertising many sponsors at once!

A company choses whom to sponser based on both the driver's success and market ability/ fan demographics.

Obviously, it wouldn;t make sense for Dale Jr to advertise paint or Jeff Gordon to advertise Budwieser.
