it does the same thing that a regular router does (a wired router). It routes network traffic (connects computers into a network or connects different networks together, (like your home network where you have several computers to another bigger network (the Internet)).

The difference between a wireless router and the old (wired) kind is that a wireless one does it wirelessly. It sends out radio signals through the air that can be picked up by a wireless NIC (Network Interface Card) on a PC. So you can connect from your PC (if you have a wireless NIC card (also just called a "wireless card") to the internet if you have a wireless router sending out the signal from where your DSL or Cable modem signal comes into your house. This is how most people use a wireless router.

A wireless router is a device that connects to your broadband modem and act as a connection point for one or multiple computers to be connected to. In order for it to work, you need to have a wireless card in your computer. If it is a desktop, then it would be a wireless pci adapter. Notebook computers use a slightly different card that may either built into the notebook or that may be inserted in the side.

Wireless connectivity is most beneficial with notebooks, allowing the convienience of being able to roam around your home or office while being connected to the internet. For a desktop, the only benefit is not having a mass of wires running through the house.

Wireless connections are slightly slower and less secure, and if left open without an encryption lock in place, people like me can easily steal your bandwidth and slow down your connection even more.

There are various types of wireless routers and cards, the main difference is the range at which you can pick up the signal. Remember if you have one more powerful than the other (i.e. the router more powerful than the card) it will default to the less powerful unit(the card in this case).

Also if you have a cordless phone that operates on a frequency of 2.4 ghz, this may interfere with your ability to connect to the internet, as the standard wireless connection is operating on a frequency of 2.4 ghz. If you set up a wireless connection, consider getting a 5.8 ghz cordless phone. You'll sacrifice a little range, but you'll get better clarity.

I hope that isn't too much info. :)

A router allows several computers to be hooked up to one one broadband connection. If a computer had a wireless ethernet cord, or if you had a laptop, a Nintendo DS, a PSP, a Pocket PC or some other type of Wi-FI device you can go online if there was an active wireless router. Also, with most routers, you can still use wires (if you choose to) to connect to the internet with the wireless router.

Only if you have the idea of how a Router works. You connect a router to PC using (Ethernet) cable. In this situation, the ethernet cable connects from one port of the router to the ethernet (Network Interface) card on your PC. In case of wireless you need to have a wireless card instead of a ethernet card and synchronize the PC and the wireless router. Once the two devices recognize each other, they are ready to communicate

A wireless router allows you to wirelessly, using WiFi enabled handhelds or laptops (as well as many other things such as an XBox, PSP, et cetera) to connect to a network or to the Internet so long the router is connected to either or both.

I use a wireless router at home to connect to the Internet with a Palm handheld and a laptop.

You use a router to connect 2 or more computers to the same high speed internet connection. non wireless you need an ethernet cable for each computer to connect to the router. with a wireless router you do not need ethernet cables to connect the computers to the internet. The computers have to have wireless built in to them, or you buy wireless adapter things
