Ph.D's aside, google IS the most dominant force in technology today. It's simply because they are ahead of the game with new technology (software-wise) and push their R&D department to their limits.

Unfortunately, no, the most dominant force is still Microsoft
in terms of the market (would that it were not true!)
By the way, to the comment "Microsoft pretty much invented
it all": No... Microsoft invented virtually none of it. Microsoft
has grown by acquiring other companies (and their technology)
and pushing asside competitors. Microsoft is not an engineering
company - they are a marketing company.
Seriously - name a "feature" of Microsoft, and I'll find a company
that was using it earlier.
In terms of who is pushing the bounds of technology, Google
is up there, there are lots of smaller companies who are doing
it more profoundly.

I still think that belongs to Microsoft. They are the most dominant.
However, Google is quickly growing, and is coming out with many new things. It may come to dominate the internet, but I still think Microsoft is overall the most dominant in overall tech at the moment.

Nope. Cisco Systems. Most of the internet travels over their routers and equipment, Google wouldn't exist without them, the routers don't care if you're Apple or PC.
I think they are the new evil empire.
But I wish they'd hire me.
