US radio stations are still mostly dishing out same old "classic rock" and "pop" crapola. Why are there so few playing new genres of electronic music (trance, techno, D&B, House) other than Hip Hop, like Radio 1 etc. in UK and Europe? Is American listening public really that lame and purile? Or, when will programmers wake up?

The biggest problem is sponsers. Most US radio stations are owned by corporations and they are paid for by advertising. The sponsors are not seeing enough of a market in other styles of music so they wont pay to advertise. Honestly, I think most Americans dont want to listen to trance, techno, and the like unless they are in the club. It's great music for dancing and what not, but it's not the kind of music you really want to listen to at the end of a hard day of work.

For myself, I am more into progressive rock (a style that has been around for over 30 years) and I can't find that on any radio stations either. It's the same thing. It's great music for some people, but most people just don't like it so nobody will sponser it.

Because all of the radio stations in this country are now owned by a select few companies, such as Infiniti, or Clear channel, so individual taste has been taken out of the equation. They are also working with Record labels to peddling existing catalogs of music, they can make larger profits, because they don't have to put as much money into artist development. Good radio is out there, it's just hard to find, in Los Angeles, we have KCRW and KPFK

We have radio stations in my area that play tunes suited to nearly all tastes. Jazz, soft rock, hard rock (old & new), latest po & rap crap, Classic rock, and a 50's, 60's & 70's oldies station, even one called the Soundtrack of Your Life, which is classic deep cuts from the 70's. So I don't know where you live, but our radio is fine. Maybe you should try satellite radio for a better selection. XM is good!

They are NOT lame, YOU are with your " new genres of electronic music (trance, techno, D&B, House)" & other Hippity Hop Key RAP. But there are alternative music genres for YOU available on those European stations with the Yahoo!WidgetsEngine, I know, I've seen them & they're scattered around California, Canada & NYC too! Real Americans don't go for that mideastern trance camel manuer, but you can gag on it through these international radio widgets!

It's pretty bad up here in Canada too. It all feels very 'safe'. Very little originality. The 'DJ' really doesn't seem to have any say anymore. And there is no variety in shows. No real entertainment. There are 1 or 2 exceptions, but your are mainly right. It's bad.

Don't even get me started on the amount of F'ing adverts too!!!

I had to buy Sirius just so I could get access to UK radio stations in the car.

Radio stations go out of business without advertisers.

Advertisers consider very carefully who they aim their
advertisements to get the best possible return on their
advertising dollar.

People who listen to new genres are less likely to be
swayed into buying the right products than people who
listen to extremely mainstream stuff.

It doesn't seem reasonable to me, but apparently the
ratings and research doesn't lie. Believe me, its all about
the buck.

Why isn't it the same thing in Europe? Different culture,
different radio station funding ... who knows.

In my area of NY, they have a lot of different stations for all kinds of different music. From the oldies, techno, pop, rhythym and blues, country and classic country. You just have to find the right station to hear what you want.

I am so sick and tired of hearing the same old playlist on my radio stations too. No more pop! I have to say though, I definitely dont want too much electronic music.

That music isnt very entertaining to us. We wonder why you guys listen to that crap. At least I do. Whats the point of music that has no words? Plus, drugs are not legal here, so we cant just get all HIGH and go to a rave. Why are you so mad anyways? Why do you care? You dont live here, so enjoy your own culture.

Because they're all owned by Clearchannel, the new more evil Roman Empire. Corporate Pigs if you ask me. Viva Local Radio!
