Congrats. And it's wonderful you're using a midwife. I've a friend that does.

Ok, from what my lamez teacher said, the body "practices" contractions, but they aren't that strong.

The sharp pains could be "braxton hicks" contracitons (false labor) Usually if it's real labor you're water will break. But either way, keep a check on it.

There is no harm in calling up your midwife and asking what is best to do. That's what they are for and are specially trained on this. Just call and ask. It will ease your mind.

The baby is probably being pushed down...first time labor USUALLY takes a while...I mean a LONG while...wait until you feel pain so bad that you are about to cry... then it's labor...anything else is probably just early labor...getting the baby down enough so that your body can work on harder contractions that cause effacement and opening of the cervix.

You may also pass something called a 'plug' before your water breaks..that's a good sign , as well.

people saying if your water didn't break, you aren't in labor, that's not true.....just call to be safe.

Call your midwife for reassurance. Could be beginnings of labor, or could be braxton hicks. If the pains get increasingly more intense and fall into a pattern with pains getting closer together, odds are good that it's labor.

the only time i had short sharp hits on my cervix was from my baby kicking me- she was breach at 39weeks so defin ring the mw! was ok they somehow she turned back round the day of my c-section so went back home!!

Look out for your plug, have you had a 'show' yet? it will be very pinky almost bloody its unmistakable and then you will know labour has started or will very soon.

mermaid your wrong - i was in labour and had intact waters until the last minute where they then had to be pearced by the mw. Some babies are born in the sack, full of water.

Don't listen to the people who tell you it's not labor until the water breaks.. some babies are delivered in their intact sac! My water didn't break until seconds before delivery!

It sounds like early onset of labor to me, I would call the midwife because of the sharp pains in the vagina, sounds strange to me. I didn't have any of those in my two labors. Good luck with your delivery!

Go to the hospital Labor and Delivery and stop waiting for people on Yahoo since we cannot see or examine the situation...posting online about your health and your unborn baby's health is not even worth the risk when you can just drive yourself to the hospital and get checked...that would be the most smartest thing to do.

That's kinda how my early labor started felt like period cramps go for a walk to speed things up a bit or having sex kick starts things also. Something about sex can release a hormone to start labor. I got this advice from my mid wife.

It sounds like you are getting there. It could be the start. I would wait a little bit longer. You don't want to have to sit there for 24 hours befroe you have the baby. Stay home relax and when the cramps really start to hurt or your water breaks then its time to go.

Not enough!! Just wait a little longer. All you are having is cramp and not contractions. Wait until you have contractions. Man, if those symptoms that you have is labor, than I'm in labor, too. The only problem is that I'm too early!!
