It sounds like you enjoy British literary fiction. Try Tess of the D'urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. It'll break your heart.
Here's a brief synopsis I cut from audible.com:
"In Tess Durbeyfield, Thomas Hardy created one of the most tragic heroines of English literature. Against the backdrop of a changing and haunting landscape, Tess battles for her freedom from penury and abuse. The story of her heroism and fortitude, as her destiny is relentlessly played out, is moving and unforgettable."

Read "Forever" by Pete Hamill. Excellent
Are you familiar with Jan Karon's novels?
How about Morgan Llewellyn?
My favorites in the crime genre are Sue Grafton, Robert B. Parker, Agatha Christie and Rex Stout.
Also, check out Faye Kellerman--try to read her books in order, because she develops her characters (Peter and Rina Decker) through their lives, as their children grow, etc. Great police fiction, as well as a look into a lifestyle you may not be familiar with.
Anne Tyler's "St. Maybe", "Accidental Tourist" and "The Amateur Marriage" should appeal to you.

How about Elizabeth Gaskell? She wrote the amazing novel "North & South" (you'll adore Mr. Thornton and Margaret Hale), and she has a lot of amazing stories. Somewhat similar to Jane Austen, her characters are to die for!
Good luck, hope that helps!

Have you read Evelina by Frances Burney. If you like Austen, you might enjoy that. You may or may not want to read the Bronte sisters.
You might enjoy reading HIT THE ROAD by Caroline Cooney. It's not your typical YA novel. It's about a 16 year old who has a wild (very funny) road trip with three 86 year old women on their way to their 65th college reunion (one is her grandmother).

I'd recommend Tracy Chevalier. She is a very good author that writes historical novels with a little bit of everything ...a dash of romance, a dash of mystery...a lot of historical detail which makes up the major theme of her stories.
Also...Philippa Gregory is pretty good...I found out about her last year with her book, "The other Boleyn Girl". It was a very "solid" read.
Good luck....
