Realizing that you really had a great time as a young person but being glad at the same time that you don't have to go through those things again. All the decisions, disappointments, being unsettled in what you want, those things. Being an adult is being somewhat wiser and most of all more contented in your life no matter what life deals you. Being an adult you know that unexpected events may be stressful but it is not the end of your life, you will get through it. Also you are more confident and know what you want.

altho the law says you are a fully cooked adult by 21 years of age, i believe that being an adult is more than just chronological age. I have met many adults that are nothing more than teenagers in the way they interact with the world. Being an adult means being independant in thought and deed. Being able to see beyond your own immediate needs and take into account the requirements of other people especially your children before making decisions that will impact on them. It means being able to defer gratification of what you want even if that is 30 years in the future. Taking responsibility for your own life and those who depend on you basically. It really happens about age 30 when you feel you have made a solid base for yourself as an individual and everything you learn from there only reinforces what you struggled to achieve in your 20s.

the best thing about being an adult is having your opinion count and being able to do something for yourself or others which you couldn't or can't do as a kid.

Having the freedom to be scared half to death when we realize nobody else is going to pay our bills for us.
The ability to stay up late and jump up an down on our beds without your Pappy yelling at you as well, thats a good spiff!

Getting to make your own choices.
The downside.. mom and dad prob won't bail you out when you make a really bad decision for yourself.
