I'm old enough to remember that "cell phones" used to be called "cellular telephones." I think I know what a cell is. What exactly do cells have to do with these devices?

The 'antenna' they put in your neighborhood can handle 'X' number of calls within a radius of 'Y' miles.

If you chart out the antenna on a map, they look like a growing cell culture. Several seperate blobs to start with.

As the cell gets busier, they add antennas- either nearby or even on the same tower. In our cell culture, this is a growth phase- cells dividing, growing, filling in the space.

With radio towers, you really could not do this- if they crowd together, it adds noise to the signals and causes problems, so you end up with areas with poor radio (or beeper) reception.

they are called cellular because the signal acceptors and trasmitters are plants in many districts(one cell means an area which has one signal transmitter)it is a small area.if you go from one cell to another.(while driving a car)there will be cell detachment and you attach to the other cell.the have a lot of transmittors everywhere because the signal is not strong enough to reach the telecomunication center

cell phone is also known as a moblie phone. it is call cell phone because the service provider uses cell to spilt into diferent areas. for what i know is call a 7 segment cell.

each cell have different frequency so when you travel from one place to another your phone signal will get the strongest signal from the different 'cell'

that is why some people call moblie phone as cell phone

Towers are arranged in a cell pattern. You use the one that is nearest to your phone. As you travel from one "cell" to another the phone is transferred from one tower or cell to another.
