This is a great question.
There do not appear to be any long standing communicating civilizations nearby. SETI has been looking for years, and so far, nothing.
http://www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=178025
Other searches for technological civilizations, such as SERENDIP have also come up blank.
And there is the Fermi paradox, most easily stated like so:
"The size and age of the universe incline us to believe that many technologically advanced civilizations must exist. However, this belief seems logically inconsistent with our lack of observational evidence to support it. Either the initial assumption is incorrect and technologically advanced intelligent life is much rarer than we believe, our current observations are incomplete and we simply have not detected them yet, or our search methodologies are flawed and we are not searching for the correct indicators."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETI#SERENDIP
So unless we are looking for the wrong signs (very possible) we appear to be the only technologically advanced civilization in our area of the galaxy.
I think we will find other life before it finds us. Life itself is likely to be far more common on other worlds than intelligent life. In the 4 billion year history of life on Earth, there has only been intelligent life for the last 100,000 years. And even this is debatable. Many scientists think that if there were truly intelligent life on our world we would not have NASCAR; but that is a tangent I don't want to get on right now.
As to the last part of your question: In the history of human expansion, the natives of an invaded area seldom get the better end of the bargain. Look at how the ancient Japanese treated the Ainu, how the European settlers treated the Native Americans, and how the Jews treated the Canaanites. And that was against our fellow humans. Think what we'd do to an alien species.
I hope, I truly do, that by the time humans settle space that we will have become enlightened enough to leave many of our historical flaws behind us. On the one hand, I like to believe in the ability of humans to better themselves over time. On the other hand, we have NASCAR.
Only time will tell.

Even if were able to travel at the speed of light, it will take millions of years to reach the nearest civilisation. Since this is not possible, the only other way is to develop some extraordinary powers like the ability to change dimension or some such thing.

The aliens have already visited us. They are spirit beings who are trying to deceive people into believing there is hope outside of Jesus Christ. They just appear to be from "a galaxy far, far away." They're better known as demons. First one was the serpent in the garden of Eden.

I believe that our first contact with aliens will be through
intercepted radio signals as per the SETI search...
I suspect that there are already aliens able to travel amongst
the stars and that they will probably visit us before we become
able to travel amongst the stars on our own...

We will get hit with a massive laser beam from across the galaxy that will explode the earth.
Either that or the aliens having seen our movies will construct a death star thinking that will scare us in slavery.

We'd better hope we visit them, because if they visit us, it means they're smarter than we are.
