For a time there I liked how Walter Hill started his movies (the montages) - but right now I can only think of The Warriors.
Alfred Hitchcock apparently had his scripts so detailed he didn't even have to be there, but he was and I love that he shows up somewhere in the film. Again, don't know about a favorite.
I don't look for particular directors, but I would like to add there are some good lady directors out there, too.

I love Luc Besson. He's films are beautiful, the characters are highly original and he's not a arty-farty director. He can reach popular audiences with quality art.
My favorite film of his is The Big Blue. He's made some other great films like The Professional, La Femme Nikita and The 5th Element.

I like Burton and Shyamalan. And I like most of their stuff. I like weird, dark, twilight zonish movies. And of course I am like everyone else, even if they won't admit it--Steven Spielberg is a movie genius, so I would have to add him to my list as well. Spielberg's best is Schindler's List.
Whenever I see something is going to be directed by one of those 3 men I think it's probably going to be worth watching.
