People in my school love it, but I just dont see the attraction. They are just weird little Japanese cartoons made up by people with no lives.

1) Because it is different than normal cartoons/comics. And some people like things because they are different.
2) Anime and Manga have far greater breadth than their North American counterparts. Anime can be aimed at kids or adults. It can be aimed for girls or boys. It can be action, comedy, romance, adventure or a combination of anything.
3) It's a matter of taste. Explaining why people like things is like defining the word "cool." Plenty of people like reality shows but I hate 'em. Do people find entertainment value in it? Absolutely. I do not, but hey, does that really matter as long as nobody makes me watch the latest episode of Hell's Kitchen?

You obviously like something other than anime. That's fine, because we are all different. There is a core of real anime fans, and right now we are in the middle of a fad for it. I think the attraction will die off a little after a while.
I wonder, though, if you aren't a little too vehement about your view of anime. Do you feel left out? Don't worry. Some new fad will be along, and 'everyone' will off on that attraction.

Different strokes for different folks

People watch anime and read manga because it is a different type of culture or way of thinking or story telling. most animes have deep meanings or spiritual matters in it. Mostly people think cartoons are just for kids, but anime is different. some anime's and manga's are not even for kids but for teenagers or adults because of the depth of the stories. Of course they do have anime/manga's really geared for kids and they're all cute and funny and still has some lessons in each story/episode.

You may think it is weird because you only know the usual cartoons you see or are exposed to. if you widen your horizons you'll see what all the hype about anime and manga is. i'm sure you'll get hooked once you find one that really hits you. =)

Well, I'm starting to get tired of the people who ask this question. Why do people do the things they like, well, because they like them, duh. I'm just not entirely sure why the Otaku get asked this question the most . . . The Comic people, Trekkies, the StartWars freaks, LARPers, RPers, they don't get asked why half as often as we do (probably because they are liking something not foreign). And those are the groups that can get as weird (or weirder) than the Otaku at a convention. And beyond that, there are groups that gather for things they like (or "hobbies") other that this, Quilting, Poetry, all forms of animals, R/C airplanes, Sailplanes . . . The list goes on in on. Many of them get asked why by people outside their interest, but it's on a personal scale, not once a week or more in a public forum.

Many people who do not share the interest don't take the time to accept and go on, they have to ask why the others don't like what they like, because why in Heaven's name should anyone like something other than what they like?

I'm a bookworm, first and formost, and never really cared for live-action, so I like anime and manga because there is a huge variety of stories and in a format that I prefer. You don't have to agree with me, I'm sure there are things you care for that I wouldn't like either, but hey, I'm accepting enough not to ask you why.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??????? We watch anime and read manga cuz it's awesome!!!!! it's like books/novels and TV all in one!!! It's exciting and interesting and the characters are a lot better drawn the american cartoons!!!! It really hooks you in. There are a variety of genres that appeal to everyone. Don't think that all manga/anime are good. Like regular things some are good while others aren't so great.... So before you decide to critise why dont' you try watching a good anime or read a good manga!!!!

Its because the characters are easy for people of all ages to relate to, More so than the characters of the american cartoons.
