they have these anchor metal bands that go around your back molars, that parts not too bad. then they put the brackets on with this cement/glue stuff. they stick the metal bracket to you teeth, and then they dry the glue with this weird light. when all the brackets are glued on, they put a wire in them across your teeth and into this little thing on the anchor and the colored bands hold it in place. the brackets might rub your mouth on the inside for a little while until you get used to them so get some orajel or somthing and hopefully the orthodontist will give you some wax to put over the brackets if that starts happening. your teeth will probably be sore for a few days so you might have to eat a lot of stuff that doesn't take much chewing... also its weird to eat with a wire in your mouth at first but you get used to it really fast. after that you will get your braces tightened or be given a bigger wire every time you go see the ortho. that stuff will sometimes hurt for a day or two afterwards but not always. in a few years when you get them off, they just pop 'em off and then scrape off the cement ;) good luck, its really not that bad!! oh, and try to avoid colors like white cuz if u drink coke or oj or anything like that they'll turn yellow...

At first, it will seem completely unnatural and it will be pretty uncomfortable in your mouth. Make sure you get some mouth wax that you can put over each bracket to stop the braces rubbing against your gums or cheeks. When you first get them fitted, it will just feel weird for the first half an hour or so and then after that, you will be in a lot of pain for 3-6 days. Then each time you get them tightened they will hurt for about 3 days maximum but the pain wont be as bad as when you first got them fitted. You should probably buy some yoghurt and soup as that will be pretty much the only thing you will be able to eat as when you chew there will be pressure on your teeth which will cause them to hurt even more. Also, this may sound really dumb, but try not to talk to much cause' when you do you might clash your teeth together and that will hurt, aha, trust me, I've done it. Get some painkillers and drink a lot of cold water. Avoid anything such as tea or coffee as they will stain the wires on the braces! IMPORTANT: BRUSH YOUR TEETH AFTER EVERY MEAL. Otherwise you will have food stuck in them and then food can get behind the brackets and leave staining when you take them off and you really don't want that. Try not to be scared about getting them. I know at first when I got them I was really anxious about it, I felt like everyone would think I was ugly or a freak etc. But seriously, braces aren't such a big deal. Sure, they're painful but I've had mine on for almost a year now and my teeth are near perfect already. No pain, no gain, right? Haha. So that's pretty much everything you need to know, good luck!

Ive had them and im going for a second phase, when you get them it will feel werid because your lips have to strech over something new and they stick off your teeth. Braces are good besides the fact that you get food stuck in them a lot, for the colors of the braces that you can pick, clear does not always stay clear it can fade and be stainded, but they are good cause theye are less noticable.

braces aren't so bad.

it's gunna suck gettin used to em
at first and your teeth and mouth
will hurt from time to time because
your teeth Are gettin rearranged.

and you dont get to eat everything
that you want to like peanut brittle and
sticky hard stuff like that, but it's a small
price to pay for ppl to always notice
and compliment your smile for the rest of
your life!

i enjoyed missing half a day of school
every month to go for a dental check up too!
and picking different color band each time was fun.

it's not so bad at all.
really.

just dont be stupid, and do as the dentist
instructs or you'll have to leave them on longer.

i only had to wear mine for the normal
2 years time. but my friend didn't listen to the
doc and she chewed gum and ate whatever
she wanted and would constantly break em
and she ended up havin to keep em on for
5 friggin years!

good luck!

Dental braces (also known as orthodontic braces or brackets) are a fixed appliance used in orthodontics to correct alignment of teeth and their position with regard to bite. Braces are often used to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, cross bites and open bites, or crooked teeth, and various other flaws of teeth and jaws, whether cosmetic or structural. They can be used on either upper or lower sets of teeth, or both, depending on the problem they are being used to treat. Orthodontic braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to widen the palate or jaws, create spaces between teeth, or otherwise shape the teeth and jaws. Most orthodontic patients are children or teenagers; however, more and more adults are seeking out orthodontic treatment.

I get braces the day after tomorrow. So they put glue on your teeth and stick the braces in. That's all I know so far.
