A domain is used to control a group of computers, usually as part of a large network, for like a school or business. Right click My Computer->Properties->Computer Name tab will tell you if you are on a domain or in a workgroup. If this is your personal computer, it is probably part of a workgroup, not a domain.

If it is part of a domain, it will look like a URL without a http://

It would be easier to answer your question if I knew which type of operating system you are using. I'll make the assumption that your are using XP. In this case you'd go to control panel from your start menu. Now, find the System Icon and it will open with several tabs to choose from, choose Computer Name. This will tell you if you are currently a member of a domain or a work-group. If this sounds a little vague, check out this website:

A name by which a computer connected to the Internet is identified. A typical domain name looks like this: www.ibm.com. The "www." refers to the fact that this computer is connected to the World Wide Web; the middle portion of a domain name is usually the name of the company that owns the computer—in this case,IMB ; the final portion of a domain name tells you what kind of site is served by this machine—in this case, ‘.com’ means this is a commercial site
