I hate to buy it because it's expensive for how little you get, but Abreva really makes cold sores go away fast if I use it right when I have one coming. My mom always tried to get me to take lysine on a regular basis, it's supposed to keep them away. I only get them if I'm stressed, sick or my lips get sunburned, so I try to avoid those things.

Abreva is the best OTC remedy, and Denavir is a good prescription cream, unfortunately I'm allergic to it. Proactiv is for acne and has no effect on cold sores. They're a virus, so you need an antiviral, not an antibacterial.

I believe the FDA now allows Valtrex (a genital herpes medication) to be used for cold sores (oral herpes, yuck, I know). Talk to your doctor, but I believe that a single dose on the day that you feel the tingling is what is recommended, and this will help speed up the healing process. You can ask for a one-shot prescription and then take it when necessary.
