i usually read reviews of other people who have been their,it is a free and subjective way to get to know the real hotel,not the advertised on about the service,the food...
when i go on vacation i usually preplan every day,i try to choose a hotel that is close to business centers or downtown.I look to the map of the city and the location of my hotel.
