I'm 16 years old and I came to the States 3 years ago from Nigeria.
In my country it was actually cool to be smart and intelligent but in the U.S being smart is for "geeks". No one wants to be called a geek thats why American kids are not doing so well compared to other countries when it comes to academics. Whats your take on this?

We wish it were just the peer-pressure geek thing, but it's much worse than that.

US education has lost its purpose and its soul. Bureaucrats wrangle for endless hours and change the curriculum on a whim to satisfy idiots who experiment with everything from adding instruction in multiple languages (disastrous especially in the early years) to studying religion in science classes. K-12 education has also suffered terribly from spending cuts on academics, music, art and other real learning in favor of lavish sports stadiums and uniforms for teams and cheerleaders, plus huge numbers of administrators and reduced numbers of teachers.

With the schools themselves undermining the seriousness of obtaining a real education through this kind of nonsense, it's no wonder that kids (who are nothing if not perceptive) have picked up on the message that education is decidedly uncool.

Americans in general think they're too smart. Thats the problem. And children grow up to follow their parents' school of thought. Also, for kids and teens in America, so much of emphasis is placed on other things - "being cool", into the latest fashion, music, etc. With all these in their heads, do you think they have time to focus on studying? It's like balancing 2 full-time jobs!

I feel the same way, in countries other than America, kids know the value of education and its cool to be smart and intelligent. For some dumb reason, those in America are seen as geeks. Its no wonder even Bush makes so many grammatical errors in his speeches. God save the holy queen, something needs to be done about America's sad situation.

Because schools in other countries require more work to be done...Im most other countries the kids learn multiple languages at a time for many years so they are fluent...here we only need 2 years and thats only if u wanna get to college.....And they go to school much more other places then here...students are involved in computers, tv, and sex

It would help if parents got more involved. Turned off the TV or computer and had study time.
