Cute and dressy. Not formal. Comfy low heels. I'd stay away from goth, punk, urban styles since it's with his parents. Classic and sophisticated would be a good bet. Try for a knee length skirt or dress. It will be cooler in the theater, so maybe bring a shrug or wrap.
He should be in pants, not jeans or camos or whatever, and a button-up shirt.

I find that any place in the world now if you are dressy casual that seems to work just look in the mag and look how the stars dress even they look casual maybe no jeans unless designer jeans they seem to go any were New york is a great place make sure you take the hop on hop off tour and little Italy is nice and Soho If your parents live in New York maybe you should check where you are dinning to see their dress code HAVE FUN

Rent is a little more casual than most plays. But out of respect for the theatre and the live performers, don't wear jeans or tennis shoes. Other than that, you can wear whatever business casual or dresy outfit you are comfortable with.

you can dress anyway you like, but in your case, dinner with parents, i suggest a nice dress or slacks and a comfortable top, your boyfriend should wear no less than nice slacks and a collared shirt, this will leave the options for dinner open
