There was a poll a couple of years ago that asked the general public what they would replace the national anthem with. The answer? Angels by Robbie Williams... gd grief.
Personally if it were to be changed (and I think the only time it would be, is if the Monarchy is lost) then I would go for Land of Hope and Glory, because it's more lively, yet also has gusto. It's also written by an Englishman which would go down well with the right-wingers.

Wherever I've been in the world, people seem to think the National Anthem is "It's A Long Way to Tipperary" so it's doubtful if anything will replace that.

Given things like the millenium dome and Big Brother a new national anthem will cost billions and be either irrelevant or just appeal to chavs.

My first thought before I opened the question was god save the queen by the sex pistols but I see its already been suggested!
Nothing wrong with the real god save the queen, but England should sing their own anthem rather than the full UK one!

What about "To Anocreon in Heaven"? That's the tune the US took for their national anthem, "Star-Spangled Banner". Take it back.
