Laws and permit requirements vary widely from area to area, and owning exotic cats is banned altogether in many places. You have to check with local authorities.
The legal issues will become vastly more complicated if you are interested in owning a cat that is endangered. While it is not impossible, the additional laws and permits that you have to contend with makes owning an endangered cat an unrealistic goal for most people.
Owning an exotic cat means having to remain constantly aware of changing laws and of proposed legislation, and being prepared to fight for the continued right to own your beloved pet.

Unfortunately, yes - wild cats are just that - wild and should be left that way. Some states require a license to keep them, others don't. Just check with the local USDA office and find out what the requirements are. I know a man who keeps a bobcat in a cage; as long as there aren't small children around it's fairly calm, but the owner doesn't let children around, because even though it's been de-clawed and de-fanged it still has the predatory instinct to hunt and kill small prey.

I knew a family who had tigers, they had to have a proper cage. You need to check with a conservation agent first to see what is aloud in your area. They will tell you what kind of animal you can have how many and how big and thick the cage needs to be per animal.
