Your mind/imagination is best for inspiration...then when you've thought of some basic idea, go online to find examples of it...that's what my girlfriends and I did when we designed our tattoo...we knew we wanted fire, water, and the female symbol...so we searched online for those elements, found designs we liked, and incorporated them into our tattoo...

You really need to just think about the things you like the most, like things in Nature, music that inspires you, artists that you love, etc.
All of my tattoos have something to do with things that I love. My first tattoo was a swallow-tailed butterfly b/c I absolutely love butterflies and used to spend a lot of time in the butterfly house on my campus. my second one is a triskele, which is a Celtic symbol (that was drawn by an musical artist that I love) b/c I am part Celt. My third one is a matching tattoo that my husband also got and it's the word Love written in the Elvish language of Sindarin from the Lord of the Rings books b/c we're both huge fans of Tolkein. My fourth one is a screen capture of the flowers from Pink Floyd'd The Wall b/c they are my favorite band of all time. I also plan to have "Shine On" put on my shoulders (one word on each shoulder) as another tribute to Pink Floyd. I also want to get flying dragonflies on my back b/c I have been fascinated by dragonflies since I was a little girl.
So what I'm saying is, you can never go wrong with something that you love.

depends where you are having the tattoo. I only like 2 places for tattooes on women, lower back and either shoulder... maybe a small one on the ankle, but i really don't like seeing them on the upper arm, or forearm, or breast.

If you can find bits and pieces of what you like you can usually take it to your tattoo artist and have them draw something up.

How about some kind of anthropomorphic cactus playing a saxaphone and wearing a top hat?
