So my boyfriend and I started thinking about getting tattoos together that form something when together (ie we each get half of a heart). I think I'd prefer to get something that is complete on it's own and just looks even cooler when put next to his. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure where on our bodies we would like it yet, I'm open to suggestions.

Alright, i appreciate the answers, but I'm looking for SUGGESTIONS, not people telling me that I shouldn't in case I break up. If we were married and had a slip of paper, would you tell me the same thing? I could still get divorced. Please dont' answer unless you have a TATTOO SUGGESTION, not relationship advice.

and to answer djscosmo, I do think that my boyfriend and I will be together for life? How old are you people telling me that we will break up? 15? I'm not in high school, we are not "going out" and I'm not worried about breaking up EVER.

Oh. My. God. If one more person answers this without giving me a TATTOO SUGGESTION I might scream. I understand that tattoos are permanent. I am completely and utterly aware of this. Please SPARE ME. Which is why I specified that I want something that is complete on its own. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not tell me that tattoos are permanent and I shouldn't do this because it's bad luck and we'll break up!!!!! You are all driving me CRAZY! I have tattoos already and am completely aware of their permanence. Thank you.

a sun, and then he can have a moon, then when you put them together it creates the sun and moon picture that you sometiems see. It could mean you are each one person, but together you create one. as the sun is daytime, moon is nighttime, but both together makes life each day. hope this helps.

I suggest that you really think long and hard about this. A tattoo is there for life usually! Each of you will need to find something in common that you like. A whole tattoo is better that way if things do not work out you can have a complete picture. Maybe get two separate hearts. Two stars or two cool symbols. Anyway good luck.

something original and done by a professional.. it's expensive and takes time but in the long run that's better.
don't get a scratch artist they're fools and you risk so many issues afterwards not just the embarrassment of a lesser more crappier tattoo that will fade faster.
it would be a nice too if you both worked on the idea... try it out and don't always settle for the first design. also look at tattoo art online... i love the asian stuff myself.. the more color the better.
get a real good artist.. even if you have to travel... there's some real nice work out there!

It's a very personal choice, but I'm with you, don't get something that looks unfinished unless he's beside you...you've got to be realistic too, if the relationship ends at some point, have a tattoo you'll still like having and not half of something that will forever look odd, and require you to tell the story of the ex boyfriend who has the other half...y'know?

You know what would be a funny tattoo?
Getting a tattoo on your arm or somewhere that sticks out. You were talking about the heart. Get one half of the heart on your left arm and he get the other half on his right arm. When you stand next to each other it forms the whole heart. I don't know. You can try or do something else.

my husband an i have the same tattoo but his is colored mine is red and black work,if you did the half a heart thing that is cool (if there was a breakup no biggie finish the heart and it would look broken) i also have a tattoo of a caricature of my husband, you guys could each get a cartoon of the other or draw something for each other.good luck with this!

You could both get hearts have one with like a chain around it with a lock and the other one could have a chain with a key on it. If you were to ever break up they could stand alone. If you have the one with the key just say its the key to your heart or if you have the lock say you're lookin for someone with the key, that is if you ever break up, though I wish you a long happy relationship.

a heart lock and a key
the key could be "pinned" to the skin on the heart or hung from a tribal piece, same w/ the lock.or you could have it unlocked
a sun and moon
heart w/ wings
any combo that looks good and has meaning to you both
a fish and hook on a line w/ heart bait
lol
have fun w/ it and whatever you do stay away from names and letters
although you could each have a piece of a poem or song lyrics...or something you wrote that put together is complete

not saying that it is not going to work out with you guys, but it is bad luck to get a tattoo that has to do with someone else. So my advise is to get something that looks good by itself as well as with him. Then if you break up (God forbid) then you won't have to spend your life explaining yourself to others and having to look at something that was a misstake.

That's great you are getting a tatoo. Welcome to the artificially colored people association of America. Ild really think about what you are getting. It's going to be there forever. As far as tatoos that combine to make a whole. I wouldn't. You will be explaing why it wasn't finished forever. Go for your idea of two completely different tats that make a bigger one. That sounded pretty cool.
